While I’m on the topic of theses…

I thought I’d post my undergraduate honors thesis.  Honestly,it’s a lot more of a thesis than my Master’s one will be.  The work was real research as opposed to the project I’m doing now.  Honestly, what I’m doing now is more useful in my career, though, unless I end up doing work in the computer vision area (in which case I’ve really missed the boat on the stuff I’ve been studying in grad school).

    ryan,
it has dawned on shoe and i that you will not make the h-m 6 year reunion this summer, so we have drafted a cover story for you.
you are against the proposed legalizing of mexicans, not because you dont like mexicans, but because it would severely cut into your human trafficking business. you are unable to attend the event because you are on the feds wanted list and need to keep a low profile, especially at events that might attract the federales.
there is some room for revising here, so what do you think?

Might I suggest incorporating Katy into this. Something along the lines of her fluency in Spanish and access to/experience with guns proving helpful. Not to mention her obvious ties to militia groups who could no doubt recite the 2nd amendment verbatim if asked.

On an unrelated note, why is the number of comments surrounded by brackets when it’s greater than 1, but otherwise not? (on the main page)

    Those crazy wordpress writers.

You missed the key element. The real reason he couldn’t fly up during all that mayhem was that he contracted several STDs from all the hookers he got in Mexico and he’s embarrased.

  6. shoe Says:

Oh, and it should also be mentioned that we plan to tell completely different crazy stories to everyone there so that when they talk about it together you will become this huge enigma. Good times.

  7. Steve Says:

first, katy cannot be involved in this story, because it will add an element of truf to the story, unless we create a ‘fictional’ wife that has the same name but no true life stuff involved. for instance, ryan married a border patrol officer named katy who is taller than five feet and cant even spell ddr.
second, we need to find a crazy wanted pic of someone who looks like a scruffy morlok, for the visual learners of course. this will only add to the story because people will not forget the picture.
third, we should probably tell everyone that morlok still tucks the bottom of his pant legs into his tube socks for two reasons: one, to keep the blowing mexican sand out of this pants, and two, to keep the you-know-what locked up. that thing has been inching close to escape every year, it seems like to me anyway.

  8. shoe Says:

    Hahahaha. Agreement on all points.

  9. rmorlok Says:

How about we just come up with something believable…

Like I’m the president of a multi-billion dollar international conglamorate, and I’m in Australia for a shareholders meeting.

  10. shoe Says:

Nope. Mexican hookers dude. The story is already made up.

This was an interesting read. Well-written and straightforward. It’s unfortuante that your test subjects did not know how to march properly. I especially like Figure 4.3, as the simplication of reality often illumunates its vital truths.

The opening section on modern violence reminded me of a topic I think worthy of discussion. While you are correct in acknowledging the nature of violence has changed and requires technological innovations for prevention (and this provides a potential market for your research), many people continue to believe that the amount of violence and atrocities in the world is on the rise. Although a constant barrage of news from Iraq or Israel, or an ignorance of historical facts might lead one to believe this, it’s not true.

Most areas of the world at peace are safe, relative to history. For comparison, check the homicide rates of Renaissance Europe or even the 19th century U.S. And the percentage of the world at war is lower than it has been in the last 100 years. If you think that civilian casualties are too high in modern wars, look up civilian death numbers during World Wars I and II.

I have two points after all of this. One, as a corollary to the thesis, efforts to curb violence, both technological (like this research) and political, are having long-term positive effects. (Or maybe because of increased standards of living, people are becoming less violent - er, sounds like a thesis for a different subject.) Second, it changes the subject from Mexican hookers :).

If my thesis proves one thing its that I like making Visio drawings a lot more than I like writing. I got pretty good while doing that thesis, especially for someone with no art ability whatsoever. I think some of those drawings I did were incorporated into the papers for this research that were submitted for publication.
