.NET scripting

Friday, September 29th, 2006

I was doing some research on .NET scripting this afternoon and I ran across this really great article on some of the possibilities out there. Articles from the mothership are available here and here. Maybe Dusty and I should consider adding this as a section to our book, VBScript is an option…I’m sure the kids would love it…

Twins tied for lead in AL Central

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Just check this morning and looks like the Twins have tied the Tigers for the lead in the American league central division. The Twins have 3 games left against the White Sox, so I should be able to catch the remaining action here in Champaign.

Colbert bypassing YouTube

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Ran across this on Digg.  Looks like I won’t need to link to YouTube anymore for Colbert videos.

Someone has setup a website specifically dedicated to the Colbert Report.  http://www.colbertondemand.com Best I can tell, it’s not officially linked with the show, which means it will likely be coming down due to legal troubles soon.  I personally think that Comedy Central should embrace the idea.  Maybe add some quick comercials or something, but this is way better than what they do for videos on their website.  Kind of like what revision3.com is doing for geek tv.

Chicago: There and back

Friday, September 29th, 2006

I took a day trip to Chicago for a meeting.  That’s not really all that impressive, as it was only about a 3 hour drive.  What’s realy impressive is Mike and my father did the same thing.  Coming from the Twin Cities, they left at 6 a.m. this morning.  Got to the meeting about a half hour early (12:30 p.m.) and then later that evening drove back.  It was about 750 mile round trip.  They haven’t actually gotten back  yet (should get in around 2 this morning).  Hopefully their trip will be safe.

The day excursion only marks the beginning of a crazy set of travels for my father.  After he gets home tonight (Friday 2 a.m.) he’s leaving for Iowa later in the afternoon to visit my Uncle and Grandmother.  After that weekend trip, we’re all meeting out in South Bend Indiana to see my sister and watch a Notre Dame football game.  That should be another 1200 mile trip for my parents.  I know there are a lot of people who travel more than my dad, I just think he just does a ridiculous amount in the car.

Katy launches into the Blogosphere

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

After frequent complaints that my blog was “too boring” with “boring .NET stuff,” my wife Katy has decided to show me how it’s done.  She has launched here new blog: http://www.morlok.net/katy/  Since its launch 5 minutes ago, the frequency of the word ‘Puma’ has tripled on the internet.

Found my Eigenfaces paper

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I found a paper I’d misplaced for a while (previously mentioned here).  It’s my old Eigenface project from CSCSI 5561 at the University of Minnesota (Computer Vision class).  Just thought I’d throw it up here in the hopes that Google would index it and someone else working on face recognition might find it useful.

“I can’t get enough water…I’m lovin’ it”

It shows a picture of two guys in a Kayak. I’m a bit sleep deprived but does that seem a little weird to anyone else? Man, I wish I was a business major.

Me working in promotions at McDonalds:

Boss: Ok, our promotion theme is “I’m lovin’ it”

Me: I’ve got it, let’s throw some guys in a Kayak that’s made up of our words saying “I’m lovin’ it” in a bunch of languages.

Boss: I like it, but it’s missing something…

Me: I’ve got it! We’ll add a quote: “I can’t get enough water…”

Boss: You are the smartest person on the planet. We are adding incredible value to humanity. Let’s eat a hamburger.

.NET Resources

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Maybe this is clear to everyone else, but as I’ve been working on some internationalization problems for the .NET application I’m writing, and I’ve been having a tough time finding clear tutorials on the web on how to work with .NET resouces. As part of my give back to the Net initiative, I’m going to give a quick tutorial myself from what I’ve learned, in the hope that it will save other people some time.

New Office Slang

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Ran across this on digg this evening. If you don’t like Dilbert, you probably won’t care for this either.

A few of my favorites:

Idea Hamsters – People whose idea generators are always running.

Salmon Day – The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to get screwed in the end. “God, today was a total salmon day!â€?

Stress Puppy – A person who thrives on being stressed-out and whiny.

Seagull Manager – A manager who flies in, makes a lot of noise, shits over everything and then leaves.
