Halloween 2006

Monday, October 30th, 2006

The drunk college students staggering out of bars onto green street thing is not usually my scene, but if you throw costumes into the mix, I’m there in a second! Katy and I went out last Saturday night to celebrate Halloween by watching drunk (and in a few cases, high) people stagger about in costumes. It was one of the most entertaining evenings I’ve had in a while. We spent a little time in Murphy’s, but most of it was wandering around outside checking out all the other costumes. Eventually we staked out a corner and let the entertainment come to us.

Damien was back in town from Omaha, so we went as a group with his brother Tristen and his sister Nisa (spelling?). Damien dressed as the Crow (it’s just too soon to be Steve Irwin), Tristen as a football player (not in full pads) and Nisa as a vampire.

Katy and I went as hockey players, which was easy because we just had to go downstairs and pull out our pads. Katy wore her goalie getup, while I sported the full CCCP jersey (Soviet). Perhaps the biggest lesson to be learned from the outing is that people aren’t very good with countries. From those who attempted to recognize my jersey, at least a third of them responed with “Canada!?!”. It’s a good thing we won that whole “cold war” thing, because I don’t think we could’ve sustained a full out attack from America Junior.

Anyway, most people who did recognize my jersey screamed out something to the effect of “Miracle” with a good dose of “Mighty Ducks” thrown in for good measure. (for those of you back in Minnesota, the Mighty Ducks account for 99% of the hockey experience for people around here)

The most common response Katy’s costume generated was “wow, that’s smart”. That typically came from the girls passing by. Slutty was in this year, so most girls were wearing something like a French Maid or a Playboy bunny costume, and pretty much freezing their tukus off. Katy stayed marvelously warm with her pads layered on top of a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

That pretty much sums it up for our evening out. Pictures are available here. Awesome time.

New Version of Parallels Desktop

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

I just installed the new version of Parallels Desktop for my Mac (Build 1940) and I’m already seeing improvements.  Previously when I’d try to access shared folders, it would take almost a minute for the folder to come up in Windows Explorer. (Shared folders are folders that act like network folders but are really just shared between Windows and the host OSX operating system).  Props to Parallels for at least fixing that problem.  I’ll write more if I come across any other stunning improvements/problems.

Not out yet, but it looks really cool.  Could put Google to shame. Or, more likely, Google will just buy them.

Weekend Trip to Notre Dame

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

This last weekend Katy and I visited my sister at school and caught a football game.  Good times as always.  Notre Dame won easily, and the weather was much nicer than last year when we saw a game.  Actually, it was a little bit too warm and sunny.  We all got a bit sun burned.  Pictures are available here.
