A Clean Bill of Tooth

Monday, December 11th, 2006

I passed my oral exam today (hehehe, grad students will get that one) and was found to be without cavities, enamel decalicification, and my gums are healthy — though I received my customary scolding for not flossing enough. I blew away the hygienist when I told her how much soda I drink, and I asked her what a safe PH would be for a beverage that you regularly consume. Her response was 7, but wooptie-ding-dong — I can drink water — big surprise. My working theory is that the diet pop kills the germs that would cause gingivitis and gum disease, thus offsetting the need to floss. I’ll have to run it by my dentist next time I seem him in 6 months.

Maui

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Katy and I just got back from Maui a couple days ago. The trip was a huge success, not only did we manage to escape the nasty Chicago weather hours before it hit, I also managed to catch 2 geckos and a toad on the trip (though I think I actually caught the same gecko twice — I named him Oliver*, apparently after Katy’s great great grandfather).

The flight to Maui was an interesting ordeal. I won’t get into the details here, but lets just say a couple that just met on the airplane were trying to get busy in the seat in front of me. In response to the annoyance, I turned them in for illegal Marijuana possession.

In Maui we did a bunch of stuff, ranging from snorkeling, hiking, and a luau to chasing toads, catching geckos, and digging a hole in the sand. My mother-in-law also got lei-ed for her 26th wedding anniversary. We even had Hawaiian shaved ice, which was (amazingly) even better than the stuff we had at the Taste of Champaign.

The flight home was uneventful, though the did manage to lose all our luggage. It was located a few hours later and Southwest FedExed it to us overnight so we received it this morning. Katy was relieved to get all the souvenirs back safely.

Select highlights from the trip are available here. If your a glutton for punishment, all eight-hundred some pictures can be viewed here.

* Note that I don’t actually know how to tell the sex of a gecko, so this little bugger could be having an identity crisis about now.
