Ha, no I don't think we need to encrypt the passwords on the client side in JavaScript. The web session was secured using SSL, and I'd rather not see someone roll their own encryption libraries in JavaScript, that's just asking for cryptographic weakness (JavaScript random isn't even considered truly random).

yes, one-way encryption is the way to go. no user db should ever hold a raw password. however, at what point should the one-way encryption occur? ...i mean, the user is on a page, and that page could use javascript to do the one-way encryption so the server-code only ever sees an encrypted password (to store in the db). is this up-front encryption (in client-side js) considered overkill? i hope not, because it sounds cool.

There is a web-based application (java applet) that is a simple matlab clone:

http://www.mathator.com/

It is not as complete as other matlab clones (like Scilab or Octave) but it is good for quick calculations. Also, it is not a simple internet calculator, it allows to program matlab code.

Octave works great. I'm converting old " 1997 bios "computers to Engineering work stations using Damn Small Linux.. Any suggestions for preinstalled software or matlab/octave tutorials??? Any opinions about whether high school students should learn to use matlab???

Interesting article, when I was running my own company, I was very interested in submitting an RFP for a Dept of Transportation project that wanted to notify people driving of conditions ahead. I know there are such systems out there but I think they wanted something more real time.

I know this does not really correspond with your article as much but when I read your article and the traffic monitoring, that old project came to mind. Utilizing bluetooth and GPS, a very mobile system could be used to communicate between all of the cars on a specific road. Again this comes down to the big brother factor and would people feel safe being used like that. I know I am not comfortable with the fact that I can be found via my cellphone, since its main purpose is for me to stay in touch not me being in touch.

[...] Can’t close the article without the software to back it all up with. Unfortunately, I don’t have a recommendation of which software package to use, I think that should be left up to the individual to find out on their own. But I will include a blog post that lists quite a few options to get you started, have a look here.
